Randy has a BFA from the University of Michigan in 1984, with a concentration on painting and drawing. Since the mid 1980's, Randy has been studying the technique and art of making illuminated manuscripts in the authentic manner used by artists of the middle ages. Going back to the writings and actual artifacts of these masters, Randy has developed the knowledge to a depth that few other teachers can offer. Combined with years of experience making such works, he brings a unique perspective to the working methods of medieval artists.
Randy has now made a collection of reproduction tools, including a writing slope, waxed tablets (pugilare), handmade brushes, reed and quill pens, bronze styli, and an amazing assortment of medieval pigments and the raw materials they are made from.
Class information - Class GridRanthulfr has agreed to teach several lecture demo classes. First will be a PowerPoint presentation on how he makes medieval books. It is an just over an hour long and shows photos from making parchment through binding. Moe of an overview with not a lot of detail, but the presentation touches lightly on most aspects. There will be time at the end for questions.
Next will be a PowerPoint presentation on scribal tools and materials. Again, just over an hour long with questions at the end.
We may be scheduling a workshop on Sunday for scribal critiques and/or portfolio reviews. Randthulfr will sit down with people and do a scribal consultation (pick the brain session) where people can ask whatever they want, and he will try to answer. This type of consultation is most useful if people bring examples of what they are doing to be commented on. Please plan in advance.
